Nowitzki will replace Bryant in 3-point shooting contest
Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki will replace Kobe Bryant in the 3-point shooting contest Saturday night because the Los Angeles Lakers' star has a dislocated pinkie on his right hand. Bryant's injury will not keep him out of Sunday night's All-Star game in the New Orleans Arena. Nowitzki, the NBA MVP last season, won the 3-point shootout in 2006. He will compete in the event for the fifth time.
Olajuwon, Ewing, Riley among first-time Hall finalists
Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing, who battled for NCAA and NBA titles, and Miami Heat coach Pat Riley were selected as finalists Friday for the Basketball Hall of Fame. Holdover candidates Chris Mullin, Adrian Dantley, Dennis Johnson and Golden State coach Don Nelson also are among the 15 candidates for enshrinement. Olajuwon and Ewing both played in three Final Fours, with Ewing's Georgetown team beating Olajuwon's Houston squad for the 1984 national championship.
Stojakovic: NBA idea about Euro league could work
New Orleans Hornets forward and Serbian Peja Stojakovic was intrigued by reports that the NBA is exploring whether to launch a five-team European division. "That's interesting. The only thing that concerns me is the distance," Stojakovic said among the All-Star festivities on Friday. "But everything else, I think there are cities and there are arenas that can really prove they are ready to be part of the NBA.
